Onix is a fairly rare and powerful Rock-type Pokémon that can be found in most Pokémon games. In order to evolve your Onix into Steelix, you’ll need an item called Metal Coat.Once your Onix is holding the Metal Coat, trading it will trigger the evolution into Steelix.

The only way to get a Steelix (or Scizor) would be to trade it while it holds a Metal Coat.

Hopefully you have a friend with the game that’s willing to trade.

You can’t. Only by trading an onyx equipped with a steel coat item it’ll be able to evolve into a steelix.

But Steelix is quite good, it’s worth the pain.

Onix has the same attack stat as a rattata.

Take that as you will. Steelix is quite good though, but I’d advise training one after the E-4 so you don’t need onix in your team that whole time.

Do you want to evolve Onix or Scyther in Pokémon Go? You’ll need a Metal Coat in that case.
